Alliance Conference 2019: Putting Gender Front and Centre

Save the date for the biggest event of the year for Scotland’s international development community – the Alliance Annual Conference. Taking place at the prestigious Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 25th September 2019 and exploring the theme of gender justice, our 2019 event promises to be our most ambitious yet.

Venue: Glasgow Royal Concert Hall

About this Event:

Taking place at the prestigious Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and marking the fourth anniversary of the signing of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, our 2019 conference promises to be our most ambitious yet!

Join 200 representatives from across Scotland's diverse and vibrant international development community as we ask, "How can we create sustainable, enabling environments for women and girls?"

Putting our overarching theme of gender at the heart, together we'll explore what can be done to bring about progress and enact lasting change on important international development issues, including climate change, education, poverty, and more.

Confirmed as our exciting international keynote speakers are Memory Kachambwa, Executive Director of the African Women's Development and Communication Network (FEMNET), and Olaoluwa Abagun, lawyer and women's rights activist, and founder of the Nigerian NGO, Girl Pride Circle.

Scotland's Minister for Europe, Migration and International Development, Ben Macpherson MSP, will deliver the event's Opening Address, and our Chair for the day will be Professor Tahseen Jafry, of Glasgow Caledonian University's Centre for Climate Justice.

Look forward to a day of inspiring keynote speeches, interactive workshops and valuable networking opportunities. With a range of engaging, participatory breakout sessions in both the morning and afternoon sessions, you'll have the chance to tailor the day according to your specific interests and area of expertise. Topics covered include the following:

  • A gender-sensitive approach to climate change
  • Approaches to tackling violence against women and girls
  • Influencing the Scottish and UK Parliaments on issues relating to gender justice
  • Improving educational outcomes for girls and women
  • Untangling inequalities: power, intersectionality and approaches to programming
  • Gender in the context of SDG8: Enabling access to full and productive employment and decent work for all
  • Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls throughout the humanitarian action cycle
  • Driving equality in our own workforces: Gender and leadership across the international development sector
